Nicaraguan officials visit the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office

Miami, FL — August 16, 1999 — In an effort to strengthen its democratic institutions, the government of Nicaragua has sent a team from its new public defender’s organization (La Dirección de Defensores Públicos) to observe operations in the office of Miami-Dade Public Defender Bennett H. Brummer.

The visitors are studying the means employed by Mr. Brummer’s staff to represent clients and observing attorneys involved in case preparation and jury trials. The Nicaraguans also are looking at office structure and management of heavy workloads, protection of the constitutional rights of clients and promotion of public safety.

The visitors are Dr. Maria de los Angeles Mendoza, director of the agency, Dr. Maria Esperanza Nieto, sub-director, Dr. Iris Valverde, public defender coordinator for Checchi & Company Consulting, Inc., and Timothy Cornish, chief of party for Checchi in Nicaragua. The U.S. Agency for International Development is financing the visit, which will last until Thursday, August 19.

Members of the team will be available for interviews with the news media.
